EU Import Taxes & Duties

Learn about DDP and DDU shipping terms for EU orders. Rugged Books handles import taxes by default, or you can choose to be the importer by contacting our sales team.

Updated over a month ago

Who is responsible for paying import taxes and duties?

By default, Rugged Books is the importer of record for all EU shipments. We ship on DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) terms, which means:

  • Import VAT and customs duties are included in your order total at checkout

  • You will not receive any additional charges from the carrier upon delivery

  • We handle all customs clearance on your behalf

Can I be the importer of record instead?

Yes! If you prefer to act as the importer and pay duties/VAT directly to the carrier (DDU terms), please contact [email protected] before placing your order. Our team will arrange DDU shipping for you.

What taxes are included in my order?

When Rugged Books is the importer (DDP), your checkout total includes:

  • Import VAT - Varies by country (e.g., 19% in Germany, 20% in France, 21% in Netherlands)

  • Customs duties - If applicable based on product type and value

  • All customs clearance fees

Why would I want to be the importer (DDU)?

Some customers prefer DDU shipping because:

  • Business customers may be able to reclaim VAT in their country

  • You have more control over customs documentation

  • Potential for lower upfront costs (though you'll pay duties upon delivery)

If this applies to you, contact [email protected] before ordering to arrange DDU terms.

What happens if I choose DDU shipping?

If you arrange DDU shipping with our sales team:

  • You become the importer of record

  • The carrier (typically DHL) will contact you before delivery with import charges

  • You pay VAT and duties directly to the carrier

  • You receive official customs documentation for your records

How do I get customs documentation?

For DDP orders (standard): Rugged Books handles customs clearance. If you need documentation for your records, contact us with your order number.

For DDU orders: Your carrier will provide customs clearance documentation, import VAT receipts, and commercial invoices directly to you.
